CRUISING YACHTS

Sailing boats range in size from the 11.5ft/3.50m Laser Pico, to the 247ft / 84m Mirabella V (the largest single masted yacht in the world) and the 200ft/59.2m youth training tall ship Prince William.

Cruising Yachts typically vary in size between 25ft and 60ft long.  The smaller yachts, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 29.2 (29ft/8.8m) for example, are suitable for a couple and possibly one or two children:

For larger groups you might, for example, charter a Beneteau Oceanis 40 (40ft/12m) which has three large sleeping cabins in addition to the main saloon area:

Yacht Fundamentals

Cruising yachts are primarily sailing boats, however they are all equipped with diesel engines so that they can easily be manoeuvred in out of harbours and anchorages - and you will not be stranded on a windless day!

Aside from all the equipment needed to sail the yacht charter boats normally are equipped with hot and cold water systems, a refrigerator, toilet/shower room(s). All the necessities for a comfortable holiday.

If you look at the detailed specifications on a yacht charter company's web site you will find a list of all the equipment they provide.  Click here to display an explanation of the terms you might find in a yacht specification.

Crewing Requirements

Most cruising yachts can be handled by two crew members, one of whom is the skipper or captain who has the responsibly of keeping the yacht and crew safe. If there must be one  crew member with experience of sailing and yacht handling. If there are additional crew members willing to help the skipper then his/her job is made much easier.

The qualifications needed to be a yacht skipper vary from country to country.  A general rule for Greece is that you must have equivalent of the RYA Day Skipper qualification or be able to prove you have the experience to safely skipper a yacht.
